These Fascinating Penguins

Betty’s Bay has a lot going for it. The short 30 minutes coastal drive from Manor on the Bay offers spectacular views on the Ocean (Shh… our secret: we love the golden hours, with the sun disappearing in the sea).

But the scenic coast, soft white sand beaches and warm waters are not the only reasons why we recommend our guests to make a stop at Betty’s Bay. The local inhabitants —African penguins in their thousands— are the stars of Stony Point Nature Reserve.

African Penguins used to be known as jackass penguins because of their distinctive braying. Did you know these African Penguins are the only one found on the continent? Colonies can be found from southern Namibia all the way around the South African coast to Port Elizabeth, but few places offer as remarkable a viewing point as Stony Point Nature Reserve: it’s the only place in the world where you can get close to African Penguins!

Sometimes those creatures look just like humans having normal conversations out in public. A much more private and natural environment than Boulders’ Beach in Simon’s Town, known by most of the tourists. You might also spot dassies (rock hyrax) if you are lucky.

Betty’s Bay is definitely a must-stop if you visit Cape Town. An ideal spot for kids.
